Life often takes unexpected turns, leading us to discover our true passions. For Melissa, the decision to transition from early childhood education to studying beauty therapy at Ella Baché College was a journey of self-discovery, and the pursuit of what makes her happiest.
A New Chapter in Beauty Therapy
After completing school, Melissa explored various fields, including music and ministry, and spent four years working in early childhood education. However, the challenges of the pandemic led her to reassess her career path.
“I needed to do something different after the pandemic,” Melissa shares. “I tried studying naturopathy, but it didn’t feel like the right fit for me. That’s when I decided to pursue beauty therapy. I put university on hold and applied to Ella Baché College and haven’t looked back.”
Finding Her Way to Beauty Therapy
For Melissa, the decision to study beauty therapy was driven by her fascination with skincare and the science behind skin health.
“Personally, Ella Baché products have been life-changing for me. I’m a big advocate for the products and now love learning about them,” she explains.
Why Ella Baché College?
Melissa’s connection to Ella Baché began long before her studies. “I’ve been using Ella Baché products since I was 13, thanks to my mum. I even had treatments growing up. I’ve always loved the experience of going to a salon, and being a therapist felt like such a calming and therapeutic role.”
She always knew Ella Baché was for her, “the reputation and the brand are amazing,” she says.
The supportive environment at the college further solidified her choice. “The student loan made the application process so much easier, and the college advisor was amazing when I first enquired. She made me feel like this was the right path for me.”
Melissa also praises the dedication of the trainers. “Jodi gives so much to us every week and is so professional.”
Highlights of the Journey So Far
Melissa started her diploma in February 2024 and will graduate in June 2025. Reflecting on her time at Ella Baché College, she highlights the hands-on learning experience as one of the most valuable aspects.
She loves learning about facials and waxing. “Facials are my favourite treatment, both as a client and now as a therapist-in-training. Waxing has also been super fun and satisfying to learn! I’m able to do it at home now”
Her detail-oriented approach has helped her navigate the course, saying “you need to be dedicated and passionate about the study. You get as much out of the course as you put into it.”
She goes on to say, how great it has been to also learn how to engage and communicate with clients.
Her Must-Have Treatment and Product
Melissa’s favourite treatment to perform? The Signature Facial. “It’s tailored to the client’s skin needs. Together with the skin analysis and choosing the right products, it makes it a unique experience that has lasting effects for the client.”
As for her must-have product, Melissa can’t live without the Detox Range, which she alternates with the Sensibeautics products to manage breakouts and maintain healthy skin.
Advice for Those Considering a Career Change
Knowing what she knows now, Melissa’s valuable advice to those considering a change to beauty therapy:
“Be prepared to work hard and apply yourself. Push yourself to show up every week because you get so much out of it. The trainers are incredible and share so much knowledge. It’s worth the effort!”
What’s Next for Melissa?
Currently, Melissa is balancing her studies with work experience at the Ella Baché West Lindfield Salon and running her own cleaning business.
“This experience is setting me up for the future,” she shares. “I want to learn and gain as much knowledge as I can before I graduate.”
As for her long-term goals, Melissa keeps it simple: “My goal is to be healthy and happy at work and enjoy it long-term. That’s why I chose beauty therapy—if you do what you love, it makes you happy.”
While she’s open to the idea of running her own business one day, Melissa is focused on gaining experience and building a career she truly enjoys.
